Our Philosophy

We believe that no matter where you are you should be able to eat a delicious meal. In a mountain hut, on a sailing boat with no land in sight, in a tent in the middle of a National Park, on a remote mountain bike mission, underground in a cave or in a snow cave. If you’re out there burning up calories on an excellent adventure, then you deserve food that will refuel and recharge you in everyway.

We know you can carry raw food, and on short trips this is possible. But for longer trips, or if you wish to travel light, save time and prepare healthy meals fast, Real Meals is your solution. We know from experience that raw food comes with some issues, it’s difficult to keep it fresh. Raw food can quickly sour and become unhealthy, making people sick, something nobody wants while in the wilderness. Or it simply gets squashed in your pack making a heck of a mess.

Real Meals solve this, we freeze-dry high quality meat, vegetables, grains and fruit. This means you get the nutrition you require without the hassle and risks of carrying raw food. Our freeze-dried process occurs at below-zero temperatures and retains 99% of its nutrition but weighs only 20% of its original weight.

Because of the new technology and process we use at Real Meals, all the range will cold water rehydrate, we know a cold curry isn’t going to excite everyone, but in an emergency situation or if getting hot water isn’t practical, you can still eat and get the nutrients you need.

Cooked – not assembled

Here’s the thing that distinguishes Real Meals – in our view making them the best freeze dried food in the world.

The name says it all – we call our meals Real Meals because that’s the most accurate way to describe them. They are real!

In our production kitchen, Jason, Daryn and Tina our highly qualified and internationally experienced chef’s, cook all the meals with care and craftsmanship. If you time it right, you could pop into the factory and enjoy the meals as they come fresh out of the pot. The entire meal is then put through the freeze drying process. The product you get was a home-style chef-prepared meal, all the flavours infused with each other, and the meal was blended to taste great.

Compare this to how most other freeze dried meals are made. Other companies freeze dry the ingredients separately. They then simply mix the dry ingredients together to make the meals. It’s an assembly line, not a culinary creation. This process is cheap and easy, but it’s never going to result in a pleasurable dining experience. Because the ingredients are just packed in like blocks of Lego. Flavour enhancers and other nasty stuff is often added to try and get the ingredients to work together into something remotely edible.

We couldn’t stomach these type of meals any longer and that’s why we started Real Meals. We have no interest putting another cheap and basic freeze dried meal on the market, we only want the tastiest, best meals possible, with premium ingredients and made with care.

Our Environment

Our passion is visiting pristine wilderness places. For that reason we need to make sure we’re doing everything we can to care for the planet and tread lightly. Real Meals are a member of the Soft Plastic Recycling Scheme. It’s tricky to find a bag that is air tight and can handle boiling water, but our meal bags are the best we can find and can be recycled. If you give them a clean you can place them into recycling bins so they can be remade into another handy product. You can find the nearest collection bins here.

The Real Meals bags are also reusable, once clean, they are the ultimate zip-lock bag. They are excellent waterproof bags for phones and small items that you want to keep dry on your outdoor pursuits.

Real Meals come in lightweight, convenient bags that allows you to prepare and eat your delicious meal directly out of the packet. No pots and pans are required to have a hot hearty dinner or a divine dessert. Real Meals are the ultimate for a quick and stress-free healthy meal on adventures. Spend more time tramping, hunting, fishing, biking, whatever your passion, and less time mucking around cooking and cleaning.
